General Knowledge Refresher Published this article page no 128 GLOBAL METHANE INITIATIVE (GMI) India recently co-chaired GMI Steering Leadership Meeting. GMI is a voluntary Government and an informal international partnership created to achieve global reduction in anthropogenic methane emission through partnership among developed and developing countries having economies in transition. o It was created in 2004 and has membership from 45 countries. Recently also at the UNFCCC COP26 (Glasgow), the Global Methane Pledge was launched that aims to cut down methane emissions by up to 30% from 2020 levels by the year 2030. Methane is a greenhouse gas having 25-28 times more harmful effect than CO2. o It is also the second-most abundant greenhouse gas in the atmosphere, after carbon dioxide. 5.6.4. NEARLY 49K RURAL HABITATIONS AFFECTED WITH WATER CONTAMINATION, SAYS PARLIAMENTARY PANEL REPORT The Standing Committee on Water Resources noted with concern that many habitations are affected by contamination of water due to Arsenic, Fluoride, Iron, Nitrate, Heavy Metals and high Salinity. Major findings include o Substantial amounts of unspent balances were accrued under Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) at the end of the FY 2018-19 and 2019-20JJM aims at providing household tap water connection to every household by 2024. o Financial assistance given for construction of Individual Household Latrines in the urban areas is Rs. 20,000/- while it is Rs. 12,000/- only in rural areas. 65Observations Recommendations No clarity on action taken for providing clean drinking water to habitation affected with other contaminants like Iron and Salinity which constituted bulk of the water quality affected habitations. The number of Water Quality Testing laboratories has reduced this year as compared to the previous year. Casual attitude regarding reported release of harmful and untreated chemicals by some industries. Focussed attention to be given towards such habitations and a time bound programme be formulated in consultation with concerned States for setting up of Community Water Purification Plants in all water quality affected habitations.
